Girl who disappeared at Tanger Outlets found

A girl reported missing at Tanger Outlets near Commerce in December 2011 was found this week in Baltimore, Md., Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said Thursday.

The Lawrenceville girl was 14 years old at the time her mother reported her missing while they were on a shopping trip to the outlets off Interstate 85, Mangum said.

“We felt like it was a pre-planned runaway thing, but we didn’t know for sure, so we got the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children involved,” said Mangum, who worked the case as an investigator before she was elected sheriff last fall.

The girl was last seen at the outlets after telling her mother she was going to a restroom.

She was found this week after authorities in Baltimore received information regarding her whereabouts, according to Mangum. The girl, who is fine, is now back with family in Georgia, the sheriff said.

Investigations are ongoing in Baltimore and in Georgia, Mangum said, but she would not elaborate. She did, though, praise the Center for Missing & Exploited Children and Baltimore police for the safe return of the girl “to a family who had exhausted all hope of their child ever being located.”
