GLOUCESTER TWP., N.J. (CBS) – Officials in Gloucester Township are expecting work to begin by early summer on an upscale retail outlet center.
When word of the Gloucester Premium Outlets surfaced last summer, Gloucester Township mayor David Mayer said he expected a fall groundbreaking for the project featuring 90 designer and name-brand stores.
That didn’t happen, but Mayer says the project is still on track:
“Folks might not be seeing much happening out there, but things have been happening and certainly this project is moving forward.”
Mayer says over the last several months, state-required environmental remediation — removing fertilizer, for example — and archaeological preservation has been done on the 55-acre tract of former farmland between Route 42 and the Black Horse Pike.
“We’re optimistic that we’re going to have a date for the groundbreaking in the next six weeks,” Mayer says. “And speaking with the developer, they have an expedited construction process.”
Mayer says the project will create 300 construction jobs and 700 retail positions.
The outlets could possibly open for shoppers in the summer of 2015.
