By Jung Sung-ki - The Korea Times

Shinsegae Chelsea, an affiliate of retail giant Shinsegae Group, plans to double the size of its premium outlet mall in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, by 2014, the company announced Monday.

The plan is part of efforts to “meet the consumer needs” by diversifying the fashion brands to be sold there to draw more visitors and boost the regional economy, it said in a news release.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Shinsegae Chelsea ― a 50-50 joint venture between Shinsegae and U.S.-based Simon Property Group ― about $67 million will be invested in expanding the site of Yeoju Premium Outlets to 462,700 square meters from the current 264,400 square meters, the release said.

The renovated mall will have 48,900 square meters of retail space compared to the current 25,800 square meters, it said, while the number of brands is to increase from the current 140 to 250.

“Annual sales have been on a steady increase, and the expansion of the mall is expected to lift sales further,” Choi Kyung-hee, a spokeswoman of Shinsegae Chelsea, told The Korea Times, declining to elaborate the sales figures.

The expansion of the U.S.-style luxury mall is forecast to create about 2,000 jobs and draw approximately 6 million domestic and foreign visitors annually, she said. Last year, about 4 million customers visited the mall.

To bolster the regional economy, principal agricultural products of Yeoju, such as rice, sweet potatoes and peanuts, are to be sold in the space of 1,650 square meters.

“Since its opening in 2007, Yeoju Premium Outlets has successfully laid the groundwork for a family-based shopping culture while combining shopping and tourism, not just a fashion outlet mall,” Shinsegae Chelsea CEO Choi Wu-yeol said after the signing ceremony in Las Vegas on Sunday. “I hope the outlet mall is further developed into an Asian shopping landmark beyond a shopping mall in the far suburbs.”

Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo said, “Yeoju Premium Outlets helped put Yeoju on the map and with an increasing number of visitors, the regional economy has expanded substantially.”

In March, Shinsegae Chelsea opened its second Korea-based premium outlet mall in Paju, north of Seoul. The mall of 31,000 square meters has 165 stores and offers more diverse brands than in Yeoju.

Deer Widows Weekend at Birch Run Premium Outlets

BIRCH RUN--A Birch Run Premium Outlet tradition is alive and well for shoppers this year.

The 16th annual Deer Widows Weekend brought shoppers from across the state and country, all trying to score a deal and save a buck while many of their partners were trying to score a buck on the hunt.

Fire arm deer hunting season opened Nov. 15.

Richmond resident Nicole Rhein said she has been coming to Deer Widow's Weekend for several years.

"We come every year, it's a tradition," she said. "It's a fun weekend with the girls, and we always find good deals. There are always good deals to be found."

Rhein said she isn't exactly on the hunt for Christmas shopping yet, she isn't ignoring her holiday shopping during the weekend. She has found some items and used coupons to further squeeze a deal out of her shopping excursion.

"Every gift I get someone else, I myself one for myself," she said. "I'm doing well for Christmas."

A 15-year veteran of Deer Widow's Weekend, Grand Rapids resident Carol Hekman said the time at Birch Run Premium Outlets is a great excuse to have fun while the boys go on the hunt.

"Always, this a great time, and an excellent excuse for a shopping spree," Hekman said.

"We're just enjoying the day," she said. "It's fun to be here while the guys go away for a few days, the girls get to get out and have a good time."

Murderer arrested at Philadelphia Premium Outlets

Leon Robinson (left) and Clevus Robinson (right) - no blood relation.
by Kevin Haslam - Limerick-Royersford-SpringCity Patch
The following release was sent in by Limerick Township Police Chief Bill Albany:

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Limerick police responded to the Timberland store located at the Philadelphia Premium Outlet Mall. The store manager reported that two men had been inside the store acting suspicious and after they left the store an empty boot box was found in the area where they had been standing. Police reviewed store surveillance footage and one of the males could be seen removing the boots and hiding them under his coat while the second male positioned himself to block the view of store employees. Both men left the store without making a purchase.

Responding police units located the males in another area of the mall. They did not have the boots with them and denied any knowledge of the theft. They even denied knowing each other and said it was coincidence that they were walking side by side. The subjects were identified as Clevus

Robinson, age 39 of the 600 block of Rosalie Street in Philadelphia and Leon Robinson, age 37 of the 6300 block of N. 10th Street in Philadelphia. The males stated they were not related.

Clevus Robinson, the subject observed taking the boots, was found to be wearing an under garment used by thieves to hide merchandize and he was in possession of wire cutters and a magnet used to defeat security sensors. Leon Robinson was found to be in possession of a 1997 Oldsmobile minivan and a search warrant was obtained for the vehicle. Police subsequently located the stolen boots along with stolen merchandise from other outlet retailers in addition to shopping bags lined with foil to defeat security sensors. Both subjects were arrested and charged with theft and related offenses. They were arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Walter Gadzicki and transported to Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail. [Leon $25,000, Clevus $10,000].

Leon Robinson was recently paroled from state prison with prior arrests for murder, robbery, aggravated assault, riot and fire arms violations. Clevus Robinson has 19 prior arrests that include firearms violations and nine prior retail theft arrests.

Last Call by Neiman Marcus opens in Desert Hills Premium Outlets

BY TIFFANY RAY -  The Press Enterprise

Last Call by Neiman Marcus will open its first Inland outlet Friday at Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon.

That will be followed in May by a second location in Ontario Mills that will be part of an ongoing expansion and renovation of the mall property.

The Ontario location will occupy 21,000 square feet of space on the north end of the mall, which will be retrofitted to accommodate the new store. At the same time, Nordstrom Rack will be renovated to bring it up to the look of the company’s latest prototype.

New exterior entrances will create direct access from the parking lot to both stores, and the lot will get new landscaping.

It’s the second phase of a plan announced last year to upgrade the mall. Earlier upgrades, financed with help from the city’s redevelopment agencies, include a new guest services center, renovated restrooms and new entrances near Forever 21 and Sports Authority. Forever 21 recently expanded in the mall, and Sports Authority returned after departing the mall in 2005.

The Last Call chain, which offers markdowns from Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, debuted in Texas in 1988; there are about 30 Last Call stores in the U.S. today.
