Houston Premium Outlets evacuated for hours after suspicious package reported

Sunday, March 16, 2014 KTRK-TV HOUSTON, TX

CYPRESS, TX (KTRK) -- A suspicious package forced evacuations at a northwest Harris County mall Sunday afternoon.

Deputies were called to the Houston Premium Outlets on Hempstead Road in Cypress after officials say a store manager reported a suspicious package. The manager told authorities a woman dropped off what looked like a hard-shell photo case around 4:30pm.

The mall was evacuated and K-9 units were brought in to search.

Deputies say a scent was detected. That was enough to alert officials and they called in a bomb squad.

Bomb techs spent about an hour x-raying and probed the package before opening it.

"We were able to open the package," said Dep. Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "Nothing was found inside that was any type of explosive or any type of dangerous threat to anyone."

Officials say there were no threats called in or made to the store. No one has claimed the package.

Tanger Outlet Mall remains closed after roof collapse

Posted: Mar 05, 2014 3:31 PM EST Updated: Mar 05, 2014 4:48 PM EST Posted By Wesley Goheen, wnem.com Web Managing Editor

OGEMAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
The Tanger Outlet Center in West Branch remains closed after a roof collapse that happened last week.

TV5 has learned that two of the stores will be demolished to prevent further damage. The Polo Ralph Lauren and Hanes Brands stores will be destroyed.

The collapse originated at the Ralph Lauren store and ended up impacting both the Hanes store and Van Heusen location.

According to The Ogemaw Herald, authorities say they believe the cave-in was due to a build-up of snow on the roof. No official cause has been released however.

A nearby Applebee's, which closed following the cave-in, was also closed but has since reopened.

An operations team is still assessing what steps are needed to protect the center.

Tanger Outlet roof collapse injures 2 at outlet mall

AP Wire Westbranch 2/28/14 - Grand Haven Tribune

Two customers inside a mid-Michigan outlet mall were hurt Thursday when part of the building's roof collapsed.

All of the stores in the Tanger Outlets in West Branch were closed after the roof fell into the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, said Deputy Brian Gilbert of the Ogemaw County Sheriff's Department.

"We're not really sure what instigated the collapse," Gilbert said. "I'm assuming it was probably a snow load."

The two customers inside the Polo store suffered "very minor injuries ... probably from ceiling tiles," Gilbert added.

The roof collapsed at about 2:30 p.m. Customers in all of the stores were evacuated.

It was not known when the mall would reopen, Gilbert said.

"We got the whole mall shut down until the engineers can get in there and figure out what's going on with the structure itself," he said.

The West Branch mall is one of 44 operated in 26 states and Canada by Greensboro, N.C.-based Tanger Outlets. It is the company's only outlet mall in Michigan, said spokesman Quentin Pell.

The company is monitoring the investigation into the collapse, he said.

"Our thoughts go out to those impacted by the situation," Pell told The Associated Press. "We're committed to ensuring the West Branch center is safe before reopening. We won't jeopardize them with trying to reopen too quickly."

Woodbury Common Outlet employee hit and killed by a co-worker on the way to work.

By James Nani Published: 11:03 AM - 01/12/14  Last updated: 6:13 PM - 01/12/14

WOODBURY -- A 23-year-old Woodbury Common employee on his way to work Sunday morning is dead after being hit by a vehicle while crossing Route 32, says Woodbury Police Chief Richard Vasquez.

At a little before 7 a.m. Jason Rutkowski, 23, of Washingtonville was walking to Woodbury Common Premium Outlet where he worked at the Guess Factory Store, Vasquez says.

Rutowski had parked at Central Valley Elementary School and was crossing Route 32 when Thomas Ciampoli, driving his wife Maria Ciampoli to work in a Mitsubishi Eclipse, struck Rutowski, Vasquez says.

It was still dark out, visibility was low and Rutowski was wearing dark clothing, Vasquez says.

Rutowski was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Coincidentally, Maria Ciampoli and Rutowski both worked at Guess and knew each other, Vasquez says.

The Ciampoli's were cooperating with police and didn't leave the scene of the crash. Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the death, Vasquez says. No criminal charges have been filed.

"It appears to be a tragic accident," Vasquez said. "They all knew each other. They are very distraught."

The death is still under investigation and state police are helping by doing a crash reconstruction, Vasquez says.

Man stabbed during robbery at Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets

By ANDY STEINKE Staff Writer Published: Thursday, December 19, 2013 5:05 PM CST

MICHIGAN CITY — An elderly La Porte County man was hospitalized Wednesday after he was stabbed multiple times during an armed robbery at Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets.

Michigan City Chief of Police Mark Swistek said officers were dispatched at 11:51 a.m. to the mall’s northern parking lot on a report of robbery at knife point.

A 70-year-old man and his wife, 67, had just returned to their vehicle from shopping when the incident occurred, Swistek said.

The man was in the driver’s seat. His wife was sitting next to him. When she reached to close her door, a black man in his early to mid-30s grabbed the door, reached into the vehicle and demanded the woman give him her purse.

During the suspect’s struggle with the couple, he stabbed the husband multiple times in the torso with a knife.

The man was later transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health for evaluation and treatment of his non-life threatening injuries, Swistek said.

After the attack, the suspect – about 6-feet tall with a stocky build – fled the area east toward Wabash Avenue. He got away with the woman’s purse, which contained money and other valuables, Swistek said.

Every patrol officer and investigator available was out searching for the suspect following the robbery, he said, but as of press time he had not been apprehended.

“We were just through the parking lot 15 to 20 minutes prior to the incident,” Swistek said, adding the department has been, and will continue to, patrol retail sites more than usual during the holiday shopping season.

“It is very disheartening, when you have an elderly couple who is victimized by a suspect much younger than them,” Swistek said.

While theft and robberies typically pick up this time of year, Swistek said this was the first time in recent years he could remember someone being injured to this extent.

Police do not yet know why the man was stabbed, but will update the public when more information is available. Anyone with information regarding the case can contact MCPD at (219) 873-1461.

Police Warn of Recent Car Break-ins at Merrimack Premium Outlets

Police say this man smashed the back windshield of this SUV and stole items from the vehicle that had been dropped off in the car while the customer returned to the stores to do more shopping. [Credit: Courtesy Merrimack Police Department]

A series of recent car break-ins at the Merrimack Premium Outlets has police warning shoppers to be aware of their surroundings and lock up all vehicles when they are out shopping this holiday season.

Police on Tuesday posted the two above photos to their wall on Facebook, asking if anyone recognized the man stealing a package from an SUV or the sedan he apparently left the scene in.

The photos were snapped on a cell phone by an alert mall employee on break who witnessed the incident as it was happening, according to Merrimack Police Lt. Denise Roy.
"There are people like this gentleman in the picture where that’s all they do. They stalk people watching for them leaving bags in the car," and seize the opportunity, Roy said.

In this particular incident, which she said happened on Oct. 17, the man stealing the box from the SUV actually smashed the back windshield of the vehicle in broad daylight.

Roy said in addition to seeing a recent uptick in crime like this, it also serves as a reminder to be aware of your surroundings and alert to things that seem out of the ordinary while shopping. Police ask that if people see something out of place or suspicious, to report it.

Roy said the department will be stepping up its patrols of retail centers including the Outlets this week and in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The management at the Outlets has also hired detail officers from the police department to help monitor traffic, the parking lots and the crowds during the holidays.

If you have any information about the man involved in the theft above, or if you have seen anything suspicious in the parking lots while shopping that might help in other thefts from vehicles, call the Merrimack Police Department at 424-3774.

Monday, November 11 2013 1:13 pm by Denise Civiletti - Riverheadlocal.com

A block of stores at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead was briefly evacuated this afternoon due to a gas leak.

Riverhead Police ordered the evacuation of suits 600 through 607 in Tanger I at about 12:15 p.m. today.

A mechanical failure on a gas valve caused the leak, Riverhead Fire Marshal Dave Andruskiewicz said at the scene.

Riverhead Fire Department responded to the call about an odor of gas at the busy outlet center and determined there was a leak behind the Eddie Bauer store, suite 602A.

National Grid was called to the outlet mall to shut the gas supply down. Within the hour, employees and shoppers were allowed back inside all the stores except the Eddie Bauer outlet, which remained closed while workers replaced the valve.

Former Simon executive faces fraud charge

Kathleen McLaughlin October 10, 2013 Indianapolis Business Journal

Former Simon Property Group Inc. executive Mark Palombaro faces a single count of mail fraud in connection with a construction kickback scheme, which federal prosecutors say netted him $766,000.

Palombaro reached a settlement with Simon in 2010 after the firm filed a lawsuit accusing him of steering construction contracts in return for kickbacks. The federal charge was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court of Western Pennsylvania.

Palombaro, who lives in Carmel, was senior vice president of development at Simon in 2006 when he solicited kickbacks from R.E. Crawford Construction Inc. of Springdale, Pa., for helping the firm obtain contracts to build two malls, prosecutors allege.

The Pennsylvania contractor paid Palombaro $766,000 through his company Abby Inc., and Palombaro sent one of the checks for $116,000 through the mail, according to the information that U.S. Attorney Soo Song filed Wednesday.

Prosecutors waived indictment, suggesting that Palombaro cooperated with the investigation. Mail fraud is a felony punishable by as many as 20 years in prison or as little as three years of supervised release.

Palombaro filed for bankruptcy protection last December, listing assets of $5,180 and liabilities of more than $698,000. Those included more than $150,000 in taxes owed and more than $375,000 owed to Abby Inc.

A phone call to a listed number for Palombaro in Carmel was not answered Thursday morning.

Assault Rifle Robbery at Vacaville Premium Outlets Zales.

By Catherine Bowen Mijs/ CBowen@TheReporter.com - The Reporter News - POSTED:   08/02/2013 01:01:36 AM PDT

Vacaville police are investigating a brazen holdup by four suspects who robbed a local jewelry store at gunpoint Thursday morning, officials said.

Police received a call from employees at the Zales Outlet in the Vacaville Premium Outlets at 11:24 a.m., saying that four suspects dressed in dark clothing entered the jewelry store moments earlier and robbed it, said Vacaville police Sgt. Jeff King, supervisor of the Investigative Services Section.

With faces covered, one suspect was armed with what appeared to be an assault rifle, two carried hammers and the fourth was carrying bags, witnesses told police. The suspects herded the two employees and at least three customers inside to store to a specific area while the two men carrying hammers smashed the four glass display cases during what police described as "a takeover-style robbery."

The suspects collected an undisclosed amount of jewelry before running to a waiting cream-colored mid-sized SUV and speeding from the area in an unknown direction, King said.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators and evidence scene technicians responded to the store, 131 Nut Tree Road, where they took pictures and collected evidence.

The heist was reminiscent of a similar smash-and-grab robbery at DeBartolo & Co. in downtown Vacaville last August. In that incident, which also occurred in broad daylight, six masked suspects rushed into the business. One suspect held the store's owner at gunpoint while the others shattered the display cases with hammers before grabbing the jewelry and escaping. Two of the suspects remain at large.

King said it is unknown whether there is any connection between the two robberies, or the numerous other smash-and-grab incidents that have taken place in Northern California over the past four years. Among the cities hit are Sacramento, San Jose and San Francisco.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact the Vacaville Police Department at 449-5200 or Detective Chris Lechuga at 449-5269.
