Bloomingdale's to open in Wrentham

WRENTHAM - A Bloomingdale's is scheduled to open this week at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, heralding in a new era for the popular and expansive mall and bringing in much-needed tax revenue and jobs to town.

Bloomingdale's The Outlet Store, a high-end retail establishment owned by Macy's department store chain, is slated to open Thursday.

The 24,000-square-foot store is located by the Dunkin' Donuts and Cracker Barrel Restaurant off South Street (Route 1A) on the last remaining buildable parcel fronting the outlet mall.

Bloomingdale's, a 150-year-old American department store, sells clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, optical items and housewares.

There are no Bloomingdale's in the area as the nearest one is located in Newton, at the Mall at Chestnut Hill. A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony is planned as the doors open at 10 a.m. There will be light breakfast refreshments and a disc jockey all day.

Construction of the new store began in the spring; its arrival was announced last fall when the town approved plans.

Bloomingdale's has become a retail institution, with the first store opening in 1860.

The Bloomingdale's will be one of three such stores opening across the country. The other locations are Estero, Fla., and Schaumberg, Ill. It is a division of Macy's, which has corporate offices in New York and Cincinnati and operates about 850 department stores.

Also located on the front parcel of the mall that is called the "outparcel" are a Uno Chicago Grill, Ruby Tuesday and Restoration Hardware.

The mall, opened in the fall of 1997, totals about 170 stores. It is owned by Simon Property Group, which also owns the Emerald Square mall in North Attleboro and is the nation's largest shopping mall owner.
