A entire store block at Tanger Outlets in Jeffersonville had to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon as a fire broke out inside the Talbots outlet store.

At around 4:30 p.m., a fire set off the alarm inside Talbots and firefighters from the Jefferson Township Fire Department with mutual aid from the Washington C.H. Fire Department responded to the scene.

"The fire was contained to the back storage room," said Greg Pettit, chief of the Jefferson Township Fire Department. "It started in the clothing in the back room and right now, the cause is undetermined."

The fire was contained at about 5 p.m. and the next hour was spent in "salvage and overhaul." There were no injuries.

"The 8200 block of the mall was evacuated within minutes because when we first arrived, we weren't sure where the fire started," said Pettit. "The biggest problem in the store is the smoke damage that was done."

The scene was cleared around 6 p.m., according to reports.
