On Saturday July 9th, “The Voice” winner Javier Colon took the stage. Although, this time he was not before any judges. Instead, he was in front of 2,000 fans who gathered at The Arches at Tanger Outlet in Deer Park for the Sounds of Summer Concert Series to watch their favorite star and hear his ‘voice’ live.
Fans got their first glimpse of Javier as he made his way to the stage. The crowd went wild, screaming his name and making statements such as, “We voted for you!” and “I love you!” to which Javier jokingly replied that he loved them too and that they “should probably meet properly afterward if such serious exchanges were going to be made.”
While thousands surrounded the stage, the concert felt like an intimate gathering of friends. Javier spent approximately two hours casually chatting with his fans, sharing personal stories, and singing some of the songs he performed on “The Voice.” He also pleased the crowd with original songs and covers of popular songs with a surprising Latin and country twist.
On the set list was his rendition of “Time After Time,” and “Landslide,” a duet he sang with Stevie Nicks just a week earlier in the finale. He also performed his song “Crazy,” a single off his record released in 2003, as well as his new track, “Stitch By Stitch.” A James Taylor song was also heard, as well as a song by the other J.T., Justin Timberlake, with an interlude to “Cry Me A River” which drew loud applause from the cheering audience.
It was only Javier’s second public appearance since he had taken the title of “The Voice” on June 29th. He spoke briefly about his struggles as a musician up to this point and how appreciative he is of his new opprotunities due to the show, such as being able to make music and perform it live for his fans.
"I loved the show "The Voice" and was really excited when I found out Javier was going to be performing here," Alexandra Belanich, a guest at the concert, said. "He has such a pure tone to his voice and I was excited to hear him perform live. I loved each of the finalists, but he and Dia [Frampton] were my favorites. I'm really glad Javier won, not only because he has such a great voice, but also because he seems so down-to-earth."
The new singing sensation hasn't let fame get to his head. He even said that his children’s favorite performer on the show was Vicci Martinez. He said that as long as they “appreciate good music that was all that mattered;” he was a fan of her’s as well.
After the show Javier stayed to sign autographs and take photos with the long line of admirers waiting to meet him.
Tanger Outlet’s Sounds of Summer Concert Series continues with the next show Saturday, July 16th featuring Shontelle, and Hey Monday on August 13th. Concerts are free to attend and open to all. For more information go to www.tangeroutlet.com/deerpark/events
