Charlotte Premium Outlets has ramped up construction as it plans for a July 31 opening.

Work on that nearly 400,000-square-foot outlet center began in September, and the outlet mall’s footprint is now in place.

It is being built on a 40-acre parcel on the west side of Interstate 485 between Shopton and Steele Creek roads.

“It’s amazing how much changes on a day-to-day basis,” says Sharon Campbell, general manager for Charlotte Premium Outlets.

The outlet mall is a 50-50 joint venture between Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE:SPG) and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. (NYSE:SKT), which is headquartered in Greensboro.

Campbell knows the list of projects still to be completed is long — and the weather in recent months has made the construction process challenging. But, she adds, general contractor Choate Construction is on target to meet the July 31 opening.

The outlet center’s buildings have been framed out.

This week, scaffolding surrounded large sections of the outlet mall, allowing crews to work on the exterior, which features stacked stone columns and natural paint colors.

Drains, pipes and electricity were on the schedule to be completed in the common areas. Concrete needs to be poured, parking lots paved and landscaping added.

“It’s an exciting time for any manager to see something come out of the ground,” Campbell says.

She anticipates the first retailers will begin moving into the center about 60 days before the July 31 grand opening. The outlet mall expects the “vast majority” of stores will open on that date, Campbell says.

The outlet center will have 100 stores — up from the 90 planned initially.

The mix of retailers will sell apparel and shoes, fashion accessories, leather goods, home furnishings and specialty goods.

“We’ve got a little something for everyone,” Campbell says. “Our challenge right now is to letting people know what to expect from Charlotte’s newest outlet center.”

This week, the outlet center announced the following tenants: Adidas, American Eagle, ASICS, The Body Shop, Brooks Brothers, The Children’s Place, The Cosmetics Company Store, Crabtree & Evelyn, Fossil, Gold Toe, Haggar, Jockey, Justice, Kay Jewelers, Kitchen Collection, Le Creuset, Lindt Chocolate, Perfumania, Rack Room Shoes, Robert Wayne Footwear, Samsonite, Seiko, Skechers, Swarovski, The Uniform Company, Vitamin World, Wet Seal and Wilson’s Leather.

On average, stores will range in size from 1,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet.

The remaining tenants have not yet been disclosed.

“As they’re coming on board, we’re sharing the news as quickly as we can,” Campbell says.

Simon and Tanger has said the center’s stores will provide shoppers with everyday savings of 25 percent to 65 percent.

The project is expected to generate $140 million annually in retail sales. The center’s stores will provide more than 900 full-time and part-time jobs.
