Five years ago, when The Outer Banks Hospital's Development Council began planning for its first Flights of Fancy gala, many people stepped up to the plate to launch one of the most successful fundraisers on the Outer Banks.
Tanger Outlet Center and Manager Debbie Moore have a very special place at the top of that list.
"When I learned that the hospital was raising funds to open a Cancer Resource Center, it was a natural fit for us," said Moore. Tanger Outlet Centers across the country had been raising monies for breast cancer for more than 10 years. With cancer the leading cause of death in Dare County, and breast cancer topping that list, Moore's commitment was resolute.
Over the next five years, Tanger's dedication to the hospital remained steadfast, with close to $100,000 donated for cancer services.
"Tanger has been outstanding in its support of The Outer Banks Hospital," said Van Smith, hospital president. "Tanger created momentum by taking the lead sponsorship for our first dinner dance and set an example for others to follow."
"The support that we've received every year from our retailers and our shoppers has been incredible," said Moore. "By working together we can continue to help save lives and make a real difference in out community." Tanger Outlet Center in Nags Head raised $48,000 during their 2009 Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.
In addition to raising funds to open a Cancer Resource Center, Tanger funding has contributed to the purchase of a new ultrasound machine and hematology analyzer, a chemotherapy mixing room, wigs for Look Good, Feel Better(R) and laptops for chemotherapy patients.
"I am pleased to see that The Outer Banks Hospital put these funds to good use," said Moore. "Our partnership has been rewarding, both for Tanger and for me, personally. I'm looking forward to another phenomenal year."
