Work to start at Sagamore Factory Outlet Mall

Townspeople hoping to learn the name of the supermarket chain that has signed an agreement to move into the Sagamore Factory Outlet Mall will have to wait until later this year.

Michael Cahill of Compass Realty last week said the food-store agreement is in place, but no grand announcement will come until late in 2011.

In the meantime, he said, roadway improvements at Sandwich Road and the Route 6 ramp in Sagamore as well as the interchange along the ramp itself will be largely finished by Memorial Day.

Hyannis attorney Liza Cox told the Bourne Planning Board supermarket foundation work would begin in March as mall reconstruction at the foot of the Sagamore Bridge gets started when winter breaks.

The store’s architectural details have been revised, but the market will retain a classic New England look with white trim and brick. The planning board duly approved an amended site plan and special permit for One Factory Outlet Road LLC.

The mall makeover, complete with a food store, pharmacy and restaurant serving light fare, has been in the planning for nearly four years. The food store is thought to be a Market Basket, but that has not been confirmed; and the planning board could not pry that information out of project consultants.

The supermarket in the shopping plaza off Clay Pond Road, Monument Beach meanwhile, remains vacant as Bourne residents revise their food-shopping treks out of town to coincide with weekly commuting and to dodge snowstorms this winter.

It remains to be seen if a new mall and a food store will influence trading patterns, especially by residents living beyond the Bourne rotary north of the canal as well as in Buzzards Bay; with its obvious link to the Stop & Shop in East Wareham.

Cahill said there is still some question about food store signs that might be visible from the nearby bridge and Route 6, where his clients and the Canal Region Chamber of Commerce hope to win Massachusetts Highway Department approval for vista clearing.
