McArthur Glen Designer Outlets continue to expand.

by insidermedia.com

McArthurGlen Group has experienced "double-digit" growth across its portfolio and is eyeing expansion opportunities.

That's according to its UK country manager Colin Wilding who told Insider that as well as targeting growth, the business was investing in refurbishment work at the York Designer Outlet foodcourt.

The retail group operates outlet shopping centres across the UK and Wilding said its business model was proving to be robust.

"The ongoing resilience of the outlet retailing model means that we are always looking for new opportunities in the right location," he said.

"We have just opened a McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in Athens, we are opening a new outlet in Neumunster, near Hamburg in 2012 and have two sites under way in France."

And while these planned expansions are within the continental arm of the business, Wilding said the company did not have a particular overseas focus.

"Given the strength of the outlet retailing model, we are looking at expansions across our entire European portfolio," he said.

This expansion was underpinned by revenue growth, according to Wilding.

"We are seeing strong double-digit growth across the portfolio and are looking at various expansions and new outlets – which is all emblematic of the strength of the outlet market."

The business reported turnover of £28m in the year to 31 March 2010, up from £22m in 2009, with pre-tax profit of £7.8m.

McArthurGlen's growth is in stark contrast to the current situation for high street retailers with high profile chains Jane Norman, Habitat and TJ Hughes revealing difficulties this week alone.

In addition to opening new outlets, McArthurGlen was also adding to the brands it worked with and improving its centres.

"We are constantly evolving the brand mix to ensure it is always exciting for our customers. Among others, we have recently opened Armani, Wolford and Reiss in our Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet.

"We are focusing on enhancing our food offer and environment and have completed a refurbishment to our food court in Bridgend and progressing with further refurbishments to our Livingston and York foodcourts.

"Additionally, we are re-developing the Longshop area in our Swindon centre, with plans to include additional retail units in an open-air piazza style."
