Vineyard Vines, known for its preppy clothing and ties, is opening
today (July 22). Columbia Sports Wear is expected to open on July 29 and Mario’s
Pizza begins selling pies in August, said Kathleen Hackshaw, Tanger
property manager.
“It will actually add a lot of variety to the stores,” she said. “We don’t have outdoors wear like Columbia and we needed more food.”
Vineyard Vines sought out Tanger based on a previous partnership.
“We have a strong customer base in North Carolina and Mebane was a perfect spot,” Lou Arcese, director of Vineyard Vines’ outlet stores, said. “It’s in the newest center and close to the home office in Greensboro so we figured it would get a lot of attention.”
When Tanger was first built at 4000 Arrowhead Boulevard there were many tenants that were coming with full leases but didn’t want to open until 2011, Hackshaw said. To remain at full capacity, several temporary tenants were allowed to open in Tanger knowing it would only be temporary.
“In all there were about 15 that were temporary and then as they would get national accounts to sign a lease whichever space they wanted they would kick us out,” said Debbie Stikeleather, owner of Winery at Iron Gate Farm store, one of the temporary businesses. “But we knew that going in and it was something brand new for us.”
The Winery at Iron Gate had never had a previous store and the experience at Tanger was a pleasant surprise, said Stikeleather. The success of the store and branding the winery’s name in Alamance County led Stikeleather to move the store to Holly Hill Mall.
Burlington Brands also moved to Holly Hill Mall after their temporary lease at Tanger was up.
The store was there for about seven months but decided the location was too pricey, Burlington Brands Owner Kevin Fitzgerald said.
“We wanted to see how we would do at the end of six months,” Fitzgerald said. “And we had excellent business at the end but we knew to be profitable later on it would be too expensive.”
The move to Holly Hill Mall has been pleasantly surprising, he said.
Other tenants that have since moved from Tanger include Craftique, Brookstone and Calendar Club. Embroidery and More moved from a store to a kiosk within Tanger.
In 2011, Tanger also saw the addition of Joe’s Jeans, Johnston and Murphy, Lucky Brand Jeans, Oakley’s Vault and Jakes Hamburgers.
