About eight months ago, construction began on the new Tanger Outlet Center in Mebane.
The site will feature 80 stores. Retailers like Hanes Brands, Saks 5th Avenue's Off 5th, Brooks Brothers and Michael Kors are just a few of the tenants that will offer bargain prices at the outlet center bringing in an influx of traffic from surrounding counties. It is traffic nearby businesses are excited to welcome.
General manager Kathy Hackshaw says that the weather has not slowed them down, as six days a week, from sun up to sun down, crews have been working to get the 300,000 square foot shopping plaza up and running.
"The winter weather being some of the worst we've had in years and the rainy spring didn't help very much but we got it under roof and that's what's important and we are on schedule," said Hackshaw.
The consignment store is just yards away from the new outlet center.
"We sought out to be in Mebane a number of years before that and when we found this spot, we knew it was the right spot and took the leap," said Pam Sullivan, owner of the Secret Closet.
It's been four years since she moved in the spot and it wasn't long before she began hearing mumblings about the new strip mall. So did her customers.
"I think they will benefit," said Carol Otis, a shopper. "I think it will be a joint venture for the mall and for My Secret Closet."
Otis drives from Chapel Hill to shop at the boutique and like many customers, she says that won't change once the doors are open at the new Tanger Outlet Center.
"There will be a lot of people who want to go the amazing mall which will serve a lot of people well but I think that they will also see this little jewel," said Otis.
The new Tanger Outlet Center is scheduled to open by Nov. 1.
