Construction to begin at Phoenix Premium Outlets

By Allison Hurtado, Ahwatukee Foothills News

In 90 days construction will have begun on a 360,000-square-foot outlet mall near Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino.

The project, a partnership between the Gila River Indian Community and Simon Property Group, is expected to open in spring of 2013 with 90 outlet stores, featuring high quality and designer brands, directly adjacent to the Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino, 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd. in Chandler.

On Thursday, Gila River Indian Community Gov. Greg Mendoza and David Simon, chairman and CEO of Simon Property group, met to commemorate the end of the predevelopment stage of the site and to sign the official land lease.

"This development represents the next steps towards economic self sufficiency for our community and furthers my goals as the new governor of the Gila River Indian Community of creating a more diversified income for our people," Mendoza said during a presentation before the signing.

The project is expected to bring between 300 and 500 construction jobs over 12 months and more than 800 permanent jobs once the outlets open.

Renderings of the outlets show a very modern and open outdoor shopping area that is larger in square footage than the neighboring casino.

Names of possible retailers going into the space have not yet been released. Simon promised a few would be named at the groundbreaking ceremony in 60 to 90 days.

"We know everyone is anxious to know the names (of retailers coming in)," Simon said. "It's a competitive situation in this area so we are keeping those very confidential, but rest assured we will have a great project and it will be well leased. I think as a leader in this business we can assure you we will devote every ounce of our energy to make this one of the most successful centers that we have."

Simon compared this project with an outlet center the company owns in Las Vegas, which is their most successful outlet center.

Simon Property Group is the largest real estate company in the nation with the largest collection of upscale outlet centers in the U.S.

The company owns more than 350 properties worldwide, including Arizona Mills. Simon said they plan to spend around $70 million on this project.
