Tanger Outlet Mall Clears Hurdle

Updated: Friday, May 17 2013, 09:40 AM EDT DELAWARE COUNTY (Ben Garbarek) ABC6Onyourside

A proposed outlet mall in Delaware County is one step closer to reality.

The Berkshire Township Zoning Board narrowly voted to give the green light to the project Thursday night.

The outlet mall would be built behind the Harley Davidson store off I-71 and 36-37.  The 400,000 square foot mall would be similar to the Tanger Outlets in Jeffersonville.

Many neighbors are not too happy with the plan.  There are fears the traffic from shoppers could ruin the quiet, country lifestyle many people around there enjoy.

“We moved out here to be in the country,” said nearby resident Chuck Workman.  “Ideally you’d like it to stay like this forever, but that’s not going to happen.”

Supporters point to the estimated $3 million in tax revenues that would come from all of those shoppers.

“Tax dollars for the schools and township, that’s good,” Workman said.  “That’s the trade-off.  For every good thing, there’s a bad thing, so it’s a give and take.”

The plan still has another hurdle to get over before its official.  The Berkshire Township trustees will vote on it in June
