WOODBURY -- A 23-year-old Woodbury Common employee on his way to work Sunday morning is dead after being hit by a vehicle while crossing Route 32, says Woodbury Police Chief Richard Vasquez.
At a little before 7 a.m. Jason Rutkowski, 23, of Washingtonville was walking to Woodbury Common Premium Outlet where he worked at the Guess Factory Store, Vasquez says.
Rutowski had parked at Central Valley Elementary School and was crossing Route 32 when Thomas Ciampoli, driving his wife Maria Ciampoli to work in a Mitsubishi Eclipse, struck Rutowski, Vasquez says.
It was still dark out, visibility was low and Rutowski was wearing dark clothing, Vasquez says.
Rutowski was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Coincidentally, Maria Ciampoli and Rutowski both worked at Guess and knew each other, Vasquez says.
The Ciampoli's were cooperating with police and didn't leave the scene of the crash. Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the death, Vasquez says. No criminal charges have been filed.
"It appears to be a tragic accident," Vasquez said. "They all knew each other. They are very distraught."
The death is still under investigation and state police are helping by doing a crash reconstruction, Vasquez says.
