Plans to construct a $125 million factory outlet centre at Kembla Grange are being held up by the State Government's failure to finalise a land rezoning application, the company behind the proposal claims.
Total Recycling Pty Ltd spokesman Bill Bartlett said his company had been trying to build the centre for almost five years but first had to get the land rezoned from light commercial to a new zoning allowing bulky goods retail.
Mr Bartlett said the company had "jumped through all the hoops" asked by Wollongong City Council and the Department of Planning, including the production of numerous reports.
"And we still don't have an answer," Mr Bartlett said.
"The previous NSW Labor government had ample opportunity to approve this project and now the Liberal government is ignoring this crucial development that offers so many benefits for our region."
Mr Bartlett said despite talks with government departments, and the Illawarra and Planning ministers, the application was still in limbo.
"Why is Wollongong being denied this project at a time of increasing unemployment, and why has not one major development been approved in Wollongong in the past three years?" Mr Bartlett asked.
