New Hampshire officials talk with Tanger about new outlet center

PLAISTOW — The town is a little bit closer to a possible outlet shopping center on Route 125.
Economic Development Committee Chairman Warren Gerety said yesterday he had spoken to Mike Kettenbach, real estate developer for the Demoulas property on Route 125, about selling the property to a national outlet chain.

"He gave me a commitment that in 2012, they will be actively developing the property, which is all woods," Gerety said at a committee meeting yesterday. "He liked the idea of outlet stores."

Gerety has spoken with officials from Prime Outlets and Tanger Outlets, large national companies that have expressed interest in bringing their discount designer stores to Plaistow because of a tax break. But in order to build, there has to be a 40- to 50-acre property available.

The wooded Demoulas property, combined with the old drive-in theater lot, offers a total of 41 acres fronting on Route 125.

"The property could still be another Market Basket, but (Kettenbach) is going to be in contact with the outlets," Gerety said.

Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald cautioned that nothing is set in stone, but the conversations are a good sign.

"We're moving forward with discussions that would be helpful so the undeveloped property on 125 could see major economic development," he said. "This is all about creating jobs."
